Coronary Imaging

Advanced Coronary Imaging

Coronary Imaging uses advanced technologies to provide a detailed view of the coronary arteries from inside the blood vessel. Techniques such as Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) help assess coronary blockages with greater precision and assist in planning and optimising complex angioplasty procedures.

What is Coronary Imaging?

Coronary imaging refers to advanced techniques used to obtain detailed information about the inside of the coronary arteries. While conventional coronary angiography provides an outline of the blood vessel, intravascular imaging can provide additional information about the artery wall, plaque, vessel size and the characteristics of a coronary blockage.

Advanced technologies such as Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) can help the cardiologist assess selected coronary lesions more precisely and guide the planning and optimisation of angioplasty and stent procedures.

Types of Coronary Imaging

Advanced intravascular technologies provide important information that may not always be available from conventional angiography alone.

IVUS

Intravascular Ultrasound uses ultrasound technology inside the coronary artery to assess vessel size, plaque characteristics and the severity of selected coronary lesions.

OCT

Optical Coherence Tomography provides very high-resolution images of the inside of coronary arteries and can help evaluate plaque and stent characteristics.

Coronary Angiography

Coronary angiography provides an X-ray based view of blood flow within the coronary arteries and helps identify narrowing or blockage.

Why is Coronary Imaging Used?

Advanced coronary imaging may be used in selected patients when additional information is needed to understand the coronary artery, assess a blockage more precisely or guide a complex angioplasty procedure.

To obtain detailed information about the size and structure of a coronary artery.
To assess selected complex or unclear coronary blockages.
To help determine the appropriate size and placement of a coronary stent.
To evaluate calcified coronary arteries before planning advanced treatment.
To optimise selected angioplasty and stent procedures.
To investigate selected cases where the result of a previous coronary intervention requires further assessment.

Understanding IVUS & OCT

IVUS and OCT are complementary intravascular imaging technologies. The choice of technique depends on the clinical situation and the information required by the cardiologist.

IVUS Imaging

IVUS uses ultrasound to provide cross-sectional images of the coronary artery and can assist in evaluating vessel dimensions, plaque and stent expansion.

OCT Imaging

OCT uses light-based technology to provide high-resolution images of the inner structure of coronary arteries and implanted stents.

Precision-Guided PCI

In selected cases, intravascular imaging can support careful planning and optimisation of coronary angioplasty and stent treatment.

When May Coronary Imaging Be Useful?

Not every patient undergoing coronary angiography or angioplasty requires intravascular imaging. Your cardiologist decides whether advanced imaging is useful based on the coronary anatomy and clinical condition.

Complex coronary artery blockages.
Left-main or bifurcation coronary lesions.
Heavily calcified coronary arteries.
Selected patients undergoing complex or high-risk angioplasty.
Cases where conventional angiography does not provide sufficient information.
Assessment and optimisation of selected coronary stent procedures.

Benefits of Advanced Coronary Imaging

Advanced imaging helps provide additional information for selected patients and supports a more detailed understanding of coronary artery disease.

Detailed View

Provides detailed information about the coronary artery beyond a conventional angiogram.

Better Planning

Helps assess coronary anatomy and plan selected interventional procedures.

Greater Precision

Supports precision during selected angioplasty and coronary stent procedures.

Personalised Care

Helps your cardiologist make treatment decisions based on your individual coronary anatomy and condition.
